Bedford Technology Celebrates Earth Day with Recycled Plastic Lumber

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. It marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement from 1970. The idea to make it a national day came from founder Gaylord Nelson, who was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after he witnessed the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Now, Earth Day is celebrated in over 193 countries and it is a time of environmental consciousness and awareness. Many companies and individuals use this time to set up outdoor clean-up initiatives, group service activities and tree-planting ceremonies. Next year (2020) will mark the 50th year anniversary of this National Holiday.

Bedford Technology’s Environmental Initiative

Bedford Technology, among other companies in the United States, uses this day to commemorate all of the environmental initiatives that the company participates in. For example, structural recycled plastic lumber by Bedford Technology is sourced from post-industrial and post-consumer recyclables like milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles. So far, Bedford Technology has helped keep hundreds of millions of pounds of plastic out of landfills. The material is also recyclable itself, so after the project life-cycle, it can be reground and reused.

Another way that Bedford Technology helps protect Mother Nature is by using environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes. Other plastics, like PVC, can emit harmful dioxins into the air during manufacturing and burning. Dioxins are highly toxic pollutants that can harm humans, animals and the environment.

Bedford Technology also encourages other companies to “go green” by manufacturing products that can qualify for LEED project points by the USGBC. Companies can be awarded project points from the LEED Rating System who meet building material requirements; including recycled content, resource-efficient manufacturing processes and recyclable material.
