Thought, planning and preparation goes into every fencing system, and until recently, the main product was wood. Now, with so many more options, common questions that arise with fences are repair costs, long-term maintenance and sustainability in harsh environments.
Fencing systems are meant to be long-term solutions that protect, set boundaries and have a certain aesthetic appeal. The days of “white picket fence” are over with so many more types of systems and applications, not to mention products.
Fencing Materials – Broken Down
Common products used in fencing systems include wood, concrete, and metal. Wooden fencing systems have a natural appearance and come in many design and style options. However, rotting, insect and pests and increasing lumber costs may make this a larger long-term investment than anticipated.
Metal fencing systems like wrought iron are very strong, but can rust and corrode and may break down over time. Aluminum is another type of metal that is common in fencing. While it is considered strong, it is not as stiff as other metals and corrodes.
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Another product that has been used for over 30 years, especially in the agricultural industry, is PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). While this plastic product is cost-effective and more bendable than wood or metal, it can have negative effects on both your health and the environment. When PVC is manufactured, dioxins are released, and at least one dioxin in PVC is categorized as a carcinogen*. NTP (National Toxicology Program). 2016. Report on Carcinogens, Fourteenth Edition.; Research Triangle Park, NC: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service. It also cannot withstand extreme environments, and when frozen, PVC can become brittle and break, leaving sharp edges that can cause damage to anything that it comes in contact with.
HDPE Composite Plastic Lumber
Another product is recycled HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastic lumber. This environmentally-friendly product can sustain extreme habitats, has low-maintenance costs and won’t rot, or break-down and is resilient against insects and pests.
As you can see, there are many fencing products that can be used for your specific system and deciding which product is right for you can be difficult. Recycled composite plastic lumber is a great alternative to wood, metal and concrete and will hold up in tough environments.
Why is Recycled HDPE Plastic Lumber a Good Long-Term Investment?
- Cost Savings – Unlike wood and metal that need to be replaced every 20-30 years, recycled plastic lumber is a multi-generational product that can hold up in extreme elements.
- Low Maintenance – Build it once and forget about it. Our product includes installation systems that make the installation process easier and more efficient, including slots and holes.
- 50-Year Warranty – A 50-year warranty is offered on SelectForce®, FiberForce® and BarForce® by Bedford Technology, so you can have peace-of-mind when choosing our product.
