Why Not Stair Treads? – resurfaced with Recycled Plastic Lumber

By February 23, 2016 No Comments

Another application that created some good buzz last year was stair treads in apartment/housing property outdoor stair applications.  We saw increased sales and interest in replacing cracked, chipped and broken stair treads that were originally made of concrete, wood, stone or steel.  Keeping the same framing and substructure, these apartment complexes were able to salvage some of the cost of replacing the entire stairs, by just replacing the tread itself with recycled plastic lumber.

The plastic lumber profiles and sizes varied by project, but most chose to use our FIBERFORCE® material for its strength characteristics. The stair treads were also produced in a variety of colors (industrial grey, dark grey and cedar being the most used), however these can be produced in a wide range of colors (see our website for more details at www.bedfordtech.com).  Most of the property management companies decided to keep the final product in our standard finish, however we do also offer an embossed finish which gives the plastic lumber the look and feel of wood.  Just one of the many secondary options available with Bedford Technology.

There really is no limit to the possibilities of using Bedford Technology’s recycled HDPE plastic lumber (in most applications) to replace wood, concrete or other alternative materials in the market.  In many cases, we have a superior product, FIBERFORCE® Plastic Lumber that looks great and is long lasting and resistant to: rotting, splintering, water damage, termites (pests), etc.  FIBERFORCE® plastic lumber also doesn’t require painting and is very low maintenance (compared with traditional wood.)  Bedford Technology’s FIBERFORCE® Hard Tool product is a high quality, carpenter friendly product that can be drilled, sawn, cut, routed and worked just as wood lumber and comes in a variety of colors, making it more useful in commercial playground equipment, park and recreation applications, signage, boardwalks, decks, piers, parking curbs, landscaping boards and any harsh weather environment applications. With all this information, we continue to ask the question…Why Not Plastic lumber?

Bedford Technology’s FIBERFORCE® recycled HDPE plastic lumber serves as a replacement to traditional parts made from injection molding, rotational molding, vacuum forming, aluminum extrusion, lumber profiles and wood profiles. Bedford Technology can also design a plastic lumber product to suit your specific application, including custom molded products (ie: pipe supports, bench frame shapes, lids).
